artist statement

-landscape in a box

We were all trapped in our homes when the coronavirus pandemic began. Since I ordered most of the necessary items on the internet, I lived in boxes piled up around me. I started using those boxes as another type of material for my paintings.

My early works in the United States have been ink-and-wash paintings depicting the American landscape, drawn on canvas instead of traditional Korean paper. During the pandemic, I attached pieces of delivery boxes to the landscape, or they were joined together to form a three-dimensional shape. The unique cross-sections of the cardboard box resembled the method of Korean painting as if it was roughly drawn with a brush.

Art is said to reflect the era. Just as historical events and cultural trends reflect in art, I believe it is meaningful that the delivery box, commonly encountered today, is used as a material for art. These cardboard boxes seem to have come to me as a historical and artistic connection.

상자속의 풍경

코로나 팬데믹이 시작되며 우린 모두 집안에 갇혔다. 대부분의 필요한 물품을 택배로 주문하면서 자연스레 집에 택배상자가 쌓였고, 집안에 머물러야했던 나는 그 상자들을 미술재료로 쓰기 시작했다.

그동안 나의 작품들은 전통한지대신 캔버스 위에 미국풍경을 그린 수묵담채화들이었다. 코로나이후, 택배박스 조각들을 풍경화 위에 부조식으로 붙이거나 박스조각들을 이어붙여 입체형태를 만드는 작품들로 변화되었다. 골판지 상자를 잘라낸 독특한 단면은 동양화의 갈필법을 연상시켰고, 붓으로 거칠게 그려나가며 여백을 남기듯 나는 골판지 조각을 붙여 작품을 만든다.

예술은 그 시대를 반영한다고 한다. 역사적인 사건이나 문화의 흐름이 미술 속에 반영되듯, 오늘날 사람들이 가장 흔히 접하게 되는 택배박스가 미술의 주재료로 쓰인 것도 그 시대적 의미가 있을 것이다. 나에게 이 버려진 상자들은 시대적, 예술적 인연으로 다가온 듯하다.
